The Tripartite Man The Tripartite Man

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

A. R. FAUSSET (1821-1910)

A. R. Fausset, in volume 3 of his New Testament commentary, clearly states that man is constituted of spirit, soul, and body. Regarding 1 Thessalonians 5:23 he says,

It refers to man in his normal integrity: an ideal which shall be attained by the glorified believer. All three—spirit, soul, and body—each in its place, constitute man “entire.” The “spirit” links man with higher intelligences, and is that highest part receptive of the quickening Holy Spirit (1 Cor. xv. 47). The soul [psuche] is intermediate between body and spirit: it is the sphere of the will and affections. (469)
